Innovative cruise line Silversea Cruises is once again raising the nautical bar by launching a pair of Expedition World Cruises in 2021. The luxury line describes each sailing as “an uncharted world tour where passengers can immerse themselves in the most exciting experiences on the planet.”
The first one will be a 167-day voyage on Silver Cloud from Ushuaia, Argentina, on Jan. 30, 2021, that will stop at 107 destinations in 30 countries. It will include six new ports for the line that include Naxos, Folegandros and Nafpaktos, Greece; Ksamil, Albania; Bejaïa, Algeria, and Fort William, Scotland. And if you got a few million bucks hanging around, it’s offering accommodations in the two-bedroom Owner’s Suite for just short of a million dollars.
The second global odyssey takes place on Silver Whisper, which will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 7, 2021, and cover 34 countries until its final destination in New York on June 6, 2021. Naturally, you could can book part of the voyage if you don't have six months to kill.
The expedition experiences will offer hands-on explorations; immersive shore excursions, which are included in the fare, and lectures from Silversea’s expedition team. Also on board at times will be world-class experts such as the inspirational Felicity Aston MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire)—a recipient of the Polar Medal and the first and only woman to cross Antarctica alone—and Tim Severin, a world-renowned explorer who has retraced the storied journeys of St. Brendan the Navigator, Sinbad the Sailor, Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses, the First Crusade and Genghis Khan.
Here are a few highlights of Silver Cloud's world cruise:
Silver Cloud’s pilgrimage from Ushuaia will uncover Antarctica’s highlight destinations before setting course for Chile’s Valparaiso via the Chilean Fjords. From there it will set sail for Papeete, Tahiti, via Easter Island and the fabled Pitcairn Island, before voyaging toward Lautoka, Fiji. There will also be stops in a number of other iconic destinations in Oceania, including remote exploration stops in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, before guests arrive in Cairns, Australia, and then on to the famed Kimberley Coast.
Guests will subsequently visit various destinations in Indonesia before arriving in Singapore. Next, Silver Cloud will set sail for Sumatra, Sri Lanka, and Cochin, India, prior to reaching Piraeus (Athens), Lisbon and Reykjavik. As part of an emphatic conclusion, guests aboard Silversea’s 2021 Expedition World Cruise will then explore the highlights of Iceland ahead of calls in the Svalbard region and the voyage’s conclusion in Tromsø, Norway, on July 16, 2021.
If you can’t make that cruise, you have a year to prep for the world adventure that takes place on Silver Whisper departing on Jan. 7, 2021, from Ft. Lauderdale through Central America, the Panama Canal, South Pacific and on to Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and Darwin, Australia, before reaching Benoa in Bali. Various stops throughout the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea precede the ship’s arrival in Tokyo. After Kagoshima, Japan, guests will travel deeper into the iconic destinations of Asia: Shanghai, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Yangon, Colombo and Mumbai, India. The cruise will then head for Piraeus (Athens) and Lisbon before crossing the Atlantic Ocean on the ultimate stretch of the World Cruise 2021 to New York.
Silversea becomes the first cruise line to launch an Expedition World Cruise in 2021, said Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s CEO. “This momentous voyage is the result of 10 years of experience and industry-leading knowledge — qualities which enable us to unlock remarkable travel experiences for our guests and have contributed to our reputation as the industry leader.”
I love sailing on Silversea. The lux line offers signature amenities such as all suites with butler service, free wine, spirits, water, specialty coffees, Champagne, soft drinks and Wi-Fi. Tips are also included in the fare as are laundry and medical services. Other perks include business class air, $2,000 onboard spending credit per guest (not suite, that’s a great deal), all excursions, expedition gear, a few surprise gifts and more.
