In Cabo, the ATVs are allowed to be on the beach, which was a fun experience! The sand was really soft to turn in, causing some of the ATVs to get stuck for a little while.

Personal experience: First time on an ATV

This was actually my first experience riding an ATV. I was very hesitant after hearing the multiple horror stories about riding an ATV in Mexico, but was determined to ride anyway.

We rode in a group of six, with two instructors and four tourists. Of the tourists, I was the only one who did not know how to ride an ATV. The instructions were very fast and limited, as I had no idea what to do. I felt very uncomfortable with switching gears, so I left the gears in 4 the whole time. (The lessons weren't really geared toward beginners, but I quickly learned and picked it up.)

The tour took tight and fast turns, which scared me at first, but after getting the hang of things, I felt more comfortable. Keep in mind: This activity is not recommended to kids or those who would like a ‘‘tour.’’ It's best enjoyed by those who have biked before and are looking for some adventure. The attendants provided us handkerchiefs for the dust — otherwise we would have been breathing straight dirt!

 Traveler tip

Although all photos were required to be taken by the paid photographers on the tour, I sneaked my phone in to snap a couple shots while at the beach and before riding across the bridge. This ensured that I got some scenic shots in addition to action shots.
