Spend 10 memorable days sailing the South Seas to Tahiti and Bora Bora aboard the five-star Paul Gauguin, the flagship of one of our favorite cruise lines.

Why this cruise is special: This is my fifth sailing to Tahiti, and I cannot wait! If you choose the June 1 itinerary, I'll be serving as your host and guide, and world-renowned ocean preservationist and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau will be joining us. This 10-night itinerary is ideal for those who want to experience the best French Polynesia has to offer, at a good rate and with free air fare.

Details of this sailing

If you choose the June 1 sailing, you're in for a special treat: Jean-Michel Cousteau will be joining us! Jean-Michel, president of the Ocean Futures Society and son of legendary explorer of the seas Jacques Cousteau, shares his late father's love of ocean adventure and protection.

On this voyage you'll visit the remarkable Society Islands, including Huahine, the Garden Island, with its stunning crystalline lagoon. The Tuamotu Archipelago awaits you next. Made up of low-lying atolls, none of the chain's many islets rise more than 10 feet above sea level. Visit Rangiroa, home to the second-largest lagoon in the world. It's famed for its fantastic diving — you may see rays, sharks, dolphins and myriad small reef fish. Go on to call at legendary Bora Bora, Taha'a and Moorea, said to be the model for Michener's “Bali Hai.”

There's a reason these islands are world-renowned — their beauty is unmatched.

Itinerary

Here's the itinerary. Remember, you'll likely want to arrive a day or two before the ship sets sail. I can help you reserve a pre- or post-stay.

Day
Destination
Activity
1
Papeete, Tahiti
Begin your voyage through paradise in the capital of Tahiti, the largest and most populated of the French Polynesian islands. Here you'll embark the luxurious yet casual m/s Paul Gauguin in the afternoon. With an endless choice of things to do, from relaxing poolside with a book to playing the slots in the casino, you will never be bored. You'll have dinner on board and the ship will set sail at night.
2
Huahine
Today you'll call on Huahine, known as the “Garden Island” for its lush rainforests and dramatic terrain. While here, you might explore the island’s sacred sites and legendary landmarks that are among the best-preserved archaeological remains in French Polynesia. Explore the expansive lagoon, get immersed in the island's culture or just picnic on the beach.
3
Author James Michener called Bora Bora “the most beautiful island in the world.” Dominated by towering Mount Otemanu and surrounded by a lagoon protected by low-lying coral reefs, this is indeed a spectacular destination. You’ll have two days to discover this quintessential Pacific paradise. Perhaps you’ll explore its exquisite lagoon on a snorkeling tour or underwater walk, enjoy a bird’s-eye view on a helicopter tour, or thrill to a sunset tour by jetboat. A romantic overnight at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa is also available.

4
Bora Bora
Enjoy another full day to revel in the delights of Bora Bora. Embark on an off-road safari that offers breathtaking island views. Glide over crystalline waters on a glass-bottom boat to see the island’s famous marine life without getting wet. Or simply spend a few hours basking and snorkeling on our own private beach on a motu off the coast.
5
Rangiroa, Tuamotus
Rangiroa is the largest atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago, which comprises 78 coral atolls scattered over several hundred miles of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Life on these remote atolls is simple, quiet and peaceful. In the small villages, you can discover the true flavor of the Tuamotu, often participating in the daily activities of the Paumotu people. The interior lagoons are a haven for black pearl farms, fish breeding farms, snorkeling and scuba diving.
6
Fakarava
Known in the days before modern navigation as the “Dangerous Archipelago” for its shallow passages, the Tuamotus islands are a diver's paradise. You'll call next on Fakarava, whose diverse ecosystem has earned it the designation of a UNESCO-Classified Nature Reserve. There are two massive passes on the island where experienced divers can descend up to 130 feet into a world of cauliflower coral, gray sharks and fish schooling by the thousands. Or stay on land and explore the island's charming villages, ancient temples and 19th-century coral church.
7
At sea
Spend the day enjoying the Gauguin's Polynesian ambience: casual, leisurely and graceful. Perhaps you'll take in a lecture by one of our special guests, then dine in the evening over classic French cuisine at L'Etoile.
8
Taha'a (Motu Mahana)
Motu Mahana, an islet adjacent to Taha'a, is Paul Gauguin's very own South Seas paradise, featuring white-sand beaches with swaying palms, crystal-clear waters and gentle breezes. As an exclusive Paul Gauguin Cruises event, you will spend a full day on this idyllic island doing exactly as you please. Relax in the shade of a palm tree … engage in a game of volleyball … snorkel in the motu's turquoise lagoon … and enjoy a delicious al fresco barbecue lunch with Polynesian entertainment.
9
Covered in an abundance of fresh fruits and flowers, spectacular mountain peaks, peaceful multi-hued lagoons and palm-fringed beaches, Moorea features a magnificent beauty that is unsurpassed. White-sand beaches lapped by the translucent shimmering lagoon water and shaded by palm, coconut and ironwood groves stretch for miles. During your visit, you might wish to take an optional coach ride around the island to admire the stunning views.
10
Moorea/Papeete, Tahiti)
Perhaps today you will try an optional scuba diving excursion among the sea turtles and staggering amount of fish species that call Moorea's waters home. Or simply relax and revel in the island's natural splendor. Late this afternoon, the ship casts off for Tahiti's capital, where you'll enjoy a final overnight.
11
Papeete, Tahiti (disembark)
Disembark the Gauguin this morning and transfer to the airport for your flight home. Or stay on with an optional hotel stay.
