5 romantic resorts in the Yucatán, Mexico

All-inclusive resorts that amp up the heat for a sultry couples getaway

There's a reason why the Riviera Maya, 75 miles of sun-splashed Caribbean shoreline on the eastern edge of Mexico's Yucatán, is a favorite getaway for American couples.

Where to find a memorable stay

Several reasons, actually. Sun. Sea. Spray. Sports. A laid-back pace. And close proximity to the Lower 48 states.

From Cancun and Playa del Carmen to points farther south, here are five romantic resorts along the Riviera Maya for couples looking for the perfect getaway.

Family-friendly Hyatt Ziva Cancun has a little gem — the adults-only Turquoize. Yes, you read right: The resort that accepts all ages also keeps grown-up intimacy top of mind with this boutique, all-access resort within a resort. The Turquoize experience includes private transfers to and from Cancun International Airport, private check-in and a butler for when you want chocolate-covered strawberries at midnight, a rose petal bath or an en-suite dinner. The 700-square-foot accommodations get intimate with the outdoors by inviting them in via floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony that features a jet tub that’s a perfect fit for “just the two of us.” Twosomes can also access the adults-only rooftop infinity pool, and they’ll get priority seating at the onsite steakhouse, Tradewinds. There’s even a private elevator with exclusive direct access to Zen Spa; and if couples want to take advantage of more adults-only amenities, they have full privileges at nearby adults-only Hyatt Zilara Cancun. Rates start at $263 per person per night.

For couples who’d rather dance the night away than stare lovey-dovey at each other over a private en-suite dinner, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya is offering a Rock Getaway featuring rock concerts by legends such as Santana, Don Henley, Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon. Guests will have access to poolside concerts, impromptu jam sessions and late-night after parties. Room rates are $302 to $460 per night or $740 per night if you attend the concert series, which includes access to all concert series events, food, alcohol and all-inclusive hotel amenities. There are four- and seven-day packages available at both the adults-only Heaven accommodations and the family-friendly Hacienda accommodations. The concert event runs Oct. 26 to Nov. 1, 2017.

Are you one of those couples who want to be one of the first to snag a new iPhone? You'll likely love the all-new, adults-only, intimate-driven TRS brand, which just changed its name from Royal Suites, part of Palladium Hotels & Resorts. One of the properties under this new brand is the TRS Yucatan in Playa del Carmen, which is undergoing various upgrades including remodeled guest rooms, a lobby transformation, new restaurants and a new beach club. Also coming up on the horizon is the Costa Mujeres property, which will be home to the TRS Coral, as well as the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa. The Costa Mujeres property, north of Cancun, is set for completion in fall 2018. Rates for TRS Yucatan start at $373 per room per night for two adults.

Whispering in one’s ear over a champagne toast is sweet and all, but for couples who want to rev it up, consider the adults-only 420-room Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an in the Riviera Maya. This sports-centric resort offers a championship course, a soccer field and three tennis courts, not to mention paddle surfing, kayaking, catamarans for hire and snorkeling. There’s also the option for an in-pool diving lesson and water polo activities, though there's nothing wrong with just hanging by the pool -- there are four to choose from. You'll also find nine restaurants and bars as well as a beach club. When the sun sets, couples can make their way to Hacienda Doña Isabel, an onsite shopping village that includes live shows and karaoke nights. Rates start at $132 per person per night.
