Ovation of the Seas: Innovative ship sails in Australia, Alaska

Snapshot

Ovation of the Seas, the third ship of the Quantum class from Royal Caribbean, launched in 2016 and sails in the Pacific (out of its home port in Sydney) as well as Alaska.

Ovation features most of the same venues and attractions as its sister ships, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, with features such as North Star viewing pod, a skydiving simulator, a big poolside digital movie screen, an indoor rec center with bumper cars and roller skating, Flowriders (surf simulators), those cool virtual balconies for inside cabins and high-speed Internet. You'll also find a circus school, Broadway productions, and the innovative entertainment space Two70, which integrates HD-digital technology with singing, dancing and aerial shows.

Who will like sailing on Ovation of the Seas

This latest addition to the Royal Caribbean lineup is made to order for the digital generation, who will like the ship's high-speed Internet, and those who want to explore China or Australia. For those looking for nonstop entertainment, Ovation is a good choice, with its sky-diving simulator, roller skating, bumper cars and aerial artistry. And if you like the latest and greatest on the high seas, you can escape from the crowds in the adults-only Solarium pool area.

Dining

Royal Caribbean is sticking with Dynamic Dining, at least for now, for its Quantum Class ships. That means dining on Harmony has no set dining times, no assigned seats and no required formal nights. (It hasn't gone so well on Quantum of the Seas so let's hope the Ovation experience fares better.)

Ovation of the Seas offers 18 different dining options, so you can try a different restaurant nearly every night.

Complimentary restaurants

The five main restaurants are all included with your fare:

  • Chic: This cosmopolitan, stylish, French-inspired restaurant offers contemporary cuisine such as Chilean sea bass, prime roasted rib and rack of lamb.
  • Grande Restaurant: Guests choose from a menu of high-end options. Formal attire is required in this upscale restaurant where waiters in white gloves serve dishes such as lobster tail, lobster bisque, duck a l'orange, pasta alfredo and braised lamb shank.
  • Silk: Stylish Asian-themed restaurant offers a selection of Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian dishes. Typical dish: Hibachi steak.
  • American Icon Grill: Look for comfort foods such as surf and turf, New England clam chowder and macaroni and cheese.
  • Devinly Decadence: Celebrity chef Devin Alexander, who creates menus for the TV weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser,"also created the menu at Devinly, which caters to health-conscious diners.

Specialty restaurants

For an extra fee, guests can dine at alternative restaurants such as:

  • Jamie’s Italian: You'll find simple Italian fare overseen by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in a casual setting. Hand-made pastas, spaghetti and pizza are complemented by antipasti such as fennel salami, pistachio mortadella and schiacciata picante.
  • Wonderland: This themed restaurant serves dishes in a setting the evokes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. From the decor and menu to the "guides," Wonderland is designed to be fun, imaginative and quirky.
  • Chops Grille: A favorite of many Royal Caribbean cruisers, Chops Grille emphasizes beef and seafood dishes with sides such as mushrooms, grilled asparagus, spinach and fries.
  • Prime Table: Located in an intimate enclave within Chops Grille, this private epicurean experience for up to 16 people treats you to a five-course, upgraded steakhouse menu and wine pairing.
  • Izumi: You'll find Japanese fare such as sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls and noodle dishes as this upscale eatery.
  • Coastal Kitchen: Serving Mediterranean fusion cuisine, Coastal Kitchen is open only to passengers who book suites.
