Ever wonder what are the world's most popular travel destinations that people are sharing on Instagram?
TravelBird, a European travel booking site, has crunched the stats to find that most Instagrammed travel destinations in the world based on number of hashtags. Keep in mind that travelers who use Instagram skew younger; in fact, 55 percent are age 18 to 29 and only 15 percent are age 50 or older.
The top sites consist of well-known attractions (the Berlin Wall, Times Square), beaches (South Beach), theme parks (Disneyland and DisneyWorld) and events (Oktoberfest).
Here are the 10 most Instagrammed tourist attractions.
Disneyland
Coming in at No. 1, with 14.6 million tagged photos, is the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, Calif., and Paris. Actor Johnny Depp made a surprise visit to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction at Disneyland in California last month and then grave Disneyland Paris a jolt this past Sunday as he disembarked in front of a galleon moored at the park’s castle. He stars in Disney’s new movie “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which rolls out next week.
Eiffel Tower
Coming in at No. 2 is the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris (#eiffeltower, and all its other permutations, with 7.2 million tags). Above is a photo we like that was uploaded 15 minutes ago as I write this. Lots of other clever and creative variations of this icon that are posted every day.
Disney World
Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., comes in at No. 3 on Instagram with 5.8 million #disneyworld tags. The above photo was taken at Magic Kingdom, the theme park at Walt Disney World Resort featuring classic attractions, enchanting fireworks, musical parades and Disney characters.
South Beach (Miami)
I knew South Beach was popular, but No. 4 in the world on Instagram is downright impressive. You'll see 4.7 million uploads using the #southbeach tag, ranging from beach shots to water activities to nightlife and more.
Berlin Wall
Yes, the Berlin Wall in Germany has fallen, but it's not forgotten by the people who've uploaded 4.5 million photos about it with the #berlinwall tag in all its variations (though I'm not sure how the TravelBird folks tallied this up). Look for lots of touristy shots as well as impressive street graffiti and the occasional homage to the end of the Cold War.
Las Vegas Strip
Coming in at No. 6 is the glitz and neon that is the Las Vegas Strip, with 3.6 million photos with the #lasvegasstrip tag. Above is a bride-to-be and her Squad.
Big Ben (London)
Big Ben in London clocks in at 2.4 million images with the #bigben tag. People photos do well on Instagram and the photographer here captured a soccer (football) action shot at just the right moment.
Times Square (New York)
In a near tie with Big Ben is Manhattan's Times Square with 2.5 million photos tagged #timessquare. But in actuality, Times Square should rank higher because there are another 1 million photos tagged #timesquare, as with the above image.
Notre Dame (Paris)
Notre Dame also comes in at 2.5 million photos with a series of #notredame tags, most of them centering on Cathedral Notre Dame in Paris.
Oktoberfest (Munich)
10This was a surprise to us, but Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is a global party with lots of fun visuals that lasts the better part of a month. You'll find 2.2 million Instagram photos with #oktoberfest tags. Germans often use the tag #wiesen.
