Walter Christen's insight:

Travel Channel reveals its list of the best cruise ships to set sail this year. Get detailed info on why each cruise ship made this list. This is a very nice list of cruises to get you started thinking about your perfect vacation.

My only beef: Carnival for best food? Guy's Burger Joint and the The BlueIguana Cantina aboard Carnival's Fun 2.0 ships are nice, but they really can't touch the fare at some of the higher-end cruise lines, including Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Silversea, Celebrity Cruises and even Seabourn and Holland America.

Best Alaskan Cruise: Celebrity Cruises, Celebrity Solstice

Best Caribbean Cruise: Sea Dream Yacht Club, Sea Dream I and Sea Dream II

Best European River Cruise: AmaWaterways, AmaCerto

Best Family Cruise: Royal Caribbean, Anthem of the Seas

Best Hawaiian Cruise: Norwegian Cruise Line, Pride of America

Best Luxury Cruise: Seabourn Cruise Line, Seabourn Odyssey

Best Mediterranean Cruise: Viking Ocean Cruises, Viking Star

Best Mexican Cruise: Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Miracle

Unexpected Cruise for Food: Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Breeze
