Berlin and Egyptian art in photos

Remember this? It's called travel. I used to do it all the time and hope to begin again very soon. I came across some quality photos I took a bit over a year ago on a Viking Sun ocean cruise and decided to create a two-part visual list (more tomorrow).

As it happens, Berlin is not a staple of many cruise itineraries, given that it's more than two hours' distance from the Baltic Sea port of Warnemunde. But on our Viking cruise, we opted for what turned into a relaxing train ride to and from downtown Berlin — Viking managed to reserve the entire train for more than 300 guests.

We wound up spending nearly five hours in Berlin and took in such landmarks as the Brandenburg Gate, the central Mitte district, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and a drive-by of the Reichstag. But the highlight came in two museums:

  • the Neues (German for "New") Museum, which has a fantastic collection of ancient Egyptian art, and
  • the Altes Museum for a wide collection of ancient Greek and Etruscan art (look for part two on Thursday).

Here are more than 30 shots of Berlin, including some of the classic works at the Neues.
