Andorinha: Serene cruising on the Douro River

Snapshot

Andorinha, the latest river ship from Tauck River Cruises, was specifically designed and built to cruise Portugal's Douro River. The ship is a new build with minimized passenger capacity to provide more spacious staterooms and public areas — and thus a more intimate cruising experience.

Andorinha carries 84 passengers — a third fewer than similar purpose-built Douro ships — and 36 crew members. Highlights include the Panorama Lounge (Bar-Saloon on Deck 3 with Bow Terrace), two bars (one open-air, the other on the sun deck), spacious top-deck sunbathing area with an outdoor heated swimming pool. Also on the sun deck, you'll find a shaded seating area covered with retractable awnings.

Where Andorinha sails

Andorinha features 7- to 11-night explorations of Portugal's Douro River Valley, with optional land tours that include Lisbon and Madrid.

The ship boasts 12 spacious 300-square-foot Tauck Suites, 20 225-square-foot cabins, six 200-square-foot cabins and four 150-square foot cabins.

Category 3, 4 & 5 cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows with real French balconies. All cabins are equipped with in-room movies, mini-bar, adjustable climate control, private bathroom with pampering toiletries.

Cabin beds are fitted with 400-thread satin bed linen, mako cotton pillows, 100% cotton blankets and thick pillow top mattresses. A variety of custom bath products are provided along with terry cloth robes, towels and hair dryers.

The suites features beautiful Portuguese craftsmanship from local companies, which can be found in some of the furniture and lighting fixtures. The ship's color scheme as well as patterns used in the artwork, carpets and fencing are inspired by the typical decorative tiles which can be found throughout Portugal and the various lighting fixtures on board are custom made for Andorinha and resemble vines in the many vineyards along the Douro river.

Fun fact

The ship is named after a native species of migratory swallows that return to Portugal each spring. The small birds represent fidelity and home in the local culture.
