Diamond Princess: East meets West

Snapshot

Diamond Princess from Princess Cruises is a true East-meets-West experience. A bit more subdued than most cruise ships, Diamond Princess is a blend of Asian culture, with women wearing kimonos on formal nights, and the Western carefree attitudes of Australians and New Zealanders. The reduced capacity of the ship, at 1,700 passengers, makes for a laid-back atmosphere for those who are looking for a relaxing getaway with interesting people.

Who will like sailing on Diamond Princess

Most passengers are older travelers looking to explore intriguing port cities in Japan and South Korea, although you will find some young families and people in their 30s and 40s.

Where Diamond Princess sails

Destinations: Diamond Princess sails the Asia-Pacific region, offering cruises to Japan, South Korea and Pacific islands.

Dining

Get a taste of the new offerings on Diamond Princess from new private dining opportunities to specialty restaurants and a diverse selection of casual dining options.

Traditional

With Traditional Dining, you'll dine at a set time, with the same tablemates and friendly waiter each evening. With flexible Anytime Dining option, you can eat whenever and with whomever you choose. And on Diamond Princess, Anytime Dining rooms also feature an option to dine in the private wine cellar rooms.

Specialty restaurants

Elegant specialty restaurants are the perfect place to celebrate a special night out. With menus that reflect regional flavors from around the world, dishes are made with the freshest ingredients.

  • Sabatini's: With a menu specializing in Italian cuisine and premium seafood, Sabatini's offers a refined yet casual atmosphere that includes extensive personal attention from the wait staff and is sure to leave you feeling like you just stepped into an Italian ristorante.
  • Sterling Steakhouse: Voted one of the Best Cruise Ship Steakhouses by USA Today, Sterling Steakhouse features delicious made-to-order steak entrees.

Casual fare

Satisfy your cravings with a quick bite from one of the tempting casual eateries onboard:

  • Horizon Court buffet
  • Lobby Bar
  • Sundaes ice cream bar
  • Prego Pizzeria
  • Trident Grill
  • Afternoon tea
  • 24-hour room service

Activities

During the day, the bars and lounges are often transformed into trivia games. There are also ping-pong and golf-putting challenges alongside enrichment programs featuring everything from hula dancing to language classes. There is also a daytime version of Princess' Movies Under the Stars, with both Japanese and English movies. The atmosphere is busy, but still relatively quiet.

Princess Cruises' Teen Center offers passengers ages 13-17 lots of entertainment and activities suited for their age group.

Family

Like most Princess Cruises, child activities are grouped off based on age, from Princess Pelicans (ages three to seven) and Shockwaves (ages eight to 12) to Remix (ages 13-17). However, due to the culture, children aren't found as often on the Diamond Princess.

Entertainment

A variety of acts grace the Princess Theater, whether it's the traditional song-and-dance shows or talent specially from Japan or Australia. In the afternoons, this theater shows movies. And of course, the Princess tradition of Movies Under the Stars is highly anticipated by all cruisers.

All the bars and lounges have music at night, ranging from piano classics in Crooners to DJ music at Skywalkers Nightclub. But for those who don't like music, there are always trivia nights and interactive game shows.

Dress code

The standard is resort casual during the day, with a more dressed up casual at night. There are two formal nights on the cruise, although most people opt for cocktail dresses as opposed to formal gowns.

Here's a video from Princess that tells you more about Diamond Princess's features.
