Costa Smeralda: Bustling megaship sails the Mediterranean

The new flagship of the Costa Cruises fleet, Costa Smeralda debuted in December 2019 with hallmark Made in Italy touches throughout, from the public areas to the cabins.

The megaship, with 5,224 passengers at double occupancy an 6,554 passengers at full capacity, takes its name from the pristine beach on Sardinia off the coast of Italy that's popular with tourists. 

Costa Smeralda is big and bustling. It features four pools, an atrium-like Trastevere — a three-level area at the ship's center — and the Piazza di Spagna and Trastevere, which include bars and shops to provide the guests with multiple entertainment options.

Costa Smeralda offers 5- to 7-night Western Mediterranean itineraries out of Rome and Genoa, Italy, and Barcelona, Spain, visiting posts in Mallorca, Sicilty, Marseille and elsewhere.

Dining

Here are some of the main restaurants on board:

Tutti a Tavola (included), a family-friendly eatery with sea views and tasteful interior.

Bacaro (specialty dining), featuring savory delicacies and specialty drinks in a Venetian-style floating lagoon venue.

Teppanyaki offers Japanese/Asian cuisine. 

LAB - Kitchen Lab (Laboratorio del Gusto), where visitors can share their own recipes and experience the dishes made by chef Bruno Barbieri for an extra fee.

Pizzeria Pummid’oro, an Italian restaurant, offers 14 varieties of pizzas, including four seasons, Napoli, calzone and Margherita. The Amarillo ice cream shop on board features Agrimontana-based ice cream. 

Entertainment

The ship’s poolside includes a silent party zone for the guests to enjoy music while partying at the indoor pool without creating noise. A virtual band on board the ship allows the visitors to experience three concerts a week.

Sanremo Theatre features performances by international artists. Costa Boutique provides visitors with different shopping options. Other entertainment facilities include a games room, 16 treatment rooms, a Thalassotherapy pool, a water park, a beauty salon, a hammam (a type of steam bath) and the Costa Design Museum.

Bringing the kids? The ship features a mini-club for children under 3 staffed by trained crew members.  

Staterooms

Costa Smeralda has 2612 staterooms. All cabins include an interactive flat-screen satellite TV, air conditioners with adjustable thermostats, a minibar, 24/7 steward service and hair dryers. Free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service are also available for the guests.

Suites on board include wine as a welcome drink, a fruit basket, Jacuzzi bath, private VIP area in the terminal, priority disembarkation and boarding, connoisseur drinks package, reserved front row in the theater and special access to the spa for an entire day.

Sustainability

Costa Smeralda is the first ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Costa Cruises fleet. The ship was awarded the Green Plus notation assigned by certification body RINA for its environmental compliance.
